Go Up Go Down

Hey folks, looking for some advice on this. I found the location of an old ferry crossing that I know was used by Confederate troops as a campsite during the war. I know from the Offical Records that the camp was established as a gathering point for Rebel militias and troops in 1864, however though, the records offer no clue on exactly how the camp was laid out or whether it was right at the crossing point or a little ways from it. Has anyone ever had any experience with detecting old Civil War camp crossings? Would the camp have been right at the landing point of the ferry or a little further back from it? Any help is much appreciated.

If you know the Location, Use Google Earth to look at the Lay of the Land.   Even Years and Years later the photo will show Paths and Trails not seen from the Ground level.   Give it a try.

I would start a little way back and work inwards they wouldn't be right at the crossing they would try to hide a bit  Cool

I wrote a series of posts here on searching around battlegrounds which are usually designated as National Parks and off limits to us. The posts described how to find a campground which was always near to but obviously not on the battleground itself. See if you can find them using the search function at the top of the forum. Yes, we can do it for you but you'll learn more if you do it yourself.

Basically, soldiers like to sleep dry but near water. High ground but not too high is your friend. Topographical maps from Google Earth will help, as Homefire has already said.

Good to see you too, Jim. Now all we need to do is wait for spring, right? I was hoping beyond hope that winter would miss us this year. Looks like sub zero tomorrow and Sunday.

Thanks GD, yes it's going to be brutal starting tomorrow morning through Monday am....Burrrrrr, I hate it up here man
I agree, but it looks like were going to get hit with this storm coming across this coming week, but I hope it misses the mark.

Stay warm, spring will be here in another 6 wks or so, at least warmer temps.

Club  LOL,  it looks like somebody ran off with some of my Gold points while I've been out in the bush
