Greetings and input requested.

Hi all!  Just got a White's Silver Eagle as a gift from a friend, well, 2 beers!  I had no clue what it was but with a little research, I found that it is a great machine, especially for a beginner and for free.  That being said, the battery box was broken, the top missing.

Mary at White's is mailing me one, wouldn't let me pay for it, now how is that for a great company!!

Knowing I'd be spending a king's ransom on batteries, I decided to look for a solution...I come from an RC Aircraft hobbyist background, everything is electric these days, so there are tons of inexpensive electronics available now. I want my mod to do a few things, give me a steady 5 volts, allow me to use any Lipo pack I own, or would reasonably buy, allow the battery to swap while all the added components stay put.

It gives me the option of 5 or 12 volts filtered and regulated with an input across a wide range, as well as a low battery audible warning:

Input Voltage Range: 7~26v DC, 2~6 Cell LiPoly
Dimensions: 36 x 36 x 6mm
Weight: 7g

Once I get it, I'll hollow out the old battery box to figure out the best mounting position so I can measure for the beefiest battery I can fit along with it.

As long as I keep my polarities in order, I think this will work, but in practice have no idea. Anyone see a reason this wouldn't work?

Mostly because I have everything but the regulator on hand. I'd have to buy a bunch of stuff, or order one thing and mod. I'm living on a limited income (VA), so working with what I have is important.

Your solution is fine, bit again leaves me to buy a ton of batteries. The idea I proposed will allow me to use a variety of batteries I already have. I will also find the largest battery I can fit in the box with the regulator, if that isn't practical, I will move the regulator into the electronics box and wire it between the battery posts, but inside the machine not the battery box.

My main concern is with digitally regulated power.  It tends to be a bit of a square wave.  Do any electronics geniuses see that as being an issue with these machines?  Can it induce a "signal" into the detection system?  I only ask because I see people making battery boxes trying to balance cells to not over/under power their systems.  Why do this when power regulators are SO cheap now?  I don't know myself, I suppose I will find out...

I am just using the board to get the voltage I need from my Lipo battery collection rather than buying a bunch of rechargeable cells. I would rather be able to use about any battery in a pinch, the input voltage is very broad, it will step up or down to 5 or 12 volts. I'd obviously use the 5 volt output. My only worry is induced signals. Not a worry in RC, not at a level a MD may be susceptible to.

What symptoms would I look for to tell if it was an issue.  I will have an unmodded box as well so I can test...

Basically build it and see...well, that was the plan anyway. If it doesn't work, I guess I will buy a crapload of rechargeable C cells...
