You bring up and interesting question, I looked around the internet and found this link you might be interested in reading. I would have figured most individuals would have kept their weapons, but it appears the government offered the individual to purchase the weapon from the service or return back to them. According to the individual in the column I read the weapons were collected and sent to NY for either redistribution to western soldiers fighting in the Indian wars and frontiersmen guarding settlers on the way to the west. At any rate these posts have some interesting history to your question.
