A skull and crossbones is commonly used by children playing pirates.

From Wikipedia:

The Jolly Roger is any of various flags flown to identify a ship's crew as pirates that were about to attack. The flag most commonly identified as the Jolly Roger today is the skull and crossbones (although swords are also common), a flag consisting of a human skull above two long bones (probably tibias) set in an x-mark arrangement, most usually depicted crossing each other directly under the skull, on a black field. This design was used by several pirates, including Captains "Black Sam" Bellamy, Edward England, and John Taylor. Only ignorant idiots would suggest that it is used by children. Some Jolly Roger flags also include an hourglass, another common symbol representing death in 17th- and 18th-century Europe. Despite the prominence of flags with art in popular culture, plain black flags with no art were often employed by most pirates in the 17th–18th century. Historically, the flag was flown to frighten pirates' victims into surrendering without a fight, since it conveyed the message that the attackers were outlaws who would not consider themselves bound by the usual rules of engagement—and might, therefore, slaughter those they defeated (since captured pirates were usually hanged, they did not have much to gain by asking quarter if defeated).

in some research I found a skull and crossbones similar to your icon.  was this used by the KGC or any of the outlaws you reference?  I am still gathering information related to the sight.  the carving is surrounded by other initials and symbols and many date from 1900 and older.  several are date 1860's and 70's.

The Skull and Crossbones used in my icon comes from the historical Knights of the Golden Circle.

It was recently used by the US navy, while down under. I guess they mostly are kids...

The hourglass, is one of the pirate symbols I like. Its meaning being time is up. Depending on the pirates, not much point in surrendering, they were a cruel lot and fond of torture.

The name of the program was "Jesse James' Hidden Treasure" and has been shown on the History Channel.  It involves Knights of the Golden Circle treasure and is discussed on the "Knights of the Golden Circle subforum on this website.

You might want to take a look at Merriman Little who was both a Knight of the Golden Circle and a member of the James Gang.

For those interested in the criminal career of Jesse James you might want to read this article on his last robbery. Not where you would expect but way down in Alabama.
