Hmmm...

Any idea where I may be able to read any of these legends? I know Doc Holliday was a barkeep here in Estancia NM and knew Billy the Kid when he passed through here. Wonder if all three knew each other wile here? One thing about it tho, after they left estancia, heading north, they would have had to stop on this 10 acre site I play on in order to have access to water before crossing the dry areas & mountains going to Las Vegas NM.

But if you want to get to the real truth, you're going to have to dig into the OLD newspaper articles from Las Vegas, Santa Fe, and Albuquerque -- or even better hope to stumble across a copy of a hotel register with the name "Howard" in it where the signature looks an awful lot like Jesse James signature.   You might also want to read through old books about Las Vegas and the northeastern portions of New Mexico (Clovis and north)

Some good links. Thank you. Doesn't seem like JJ spent much time here in NM yet, but still have more reading to do.

I can't believe this thread has been bumped after almost two years, but it'll be fun to run with it again.  If you can find a buried stash of gold coins... good for you.  But don't expect to find any paper money that old buried in the ground.  You might find mulch, if that, if they just buried it in a hurry.  I found myself in a lurch one time and had my wife dig a hole and dump about 2 grand of paper money in it and cover it up so I could get to it when things settled down.  When things finally settled down less than six months later and I went back and dug it up, it was worm dirt.

It is the natural progression of things in relation to the earth. Naturally things can grow up outta the earth, some of which can continue for long lengths of time. Once man removes it from its natural growth, typically changing it in one fashion or another, something changes. Once it reconnect w/ the earth decomposition occurs at a fairly quick rate. Perfect example is a tree that later becomes lumber, some of which may be treated which only slows down the decomposition time... All returns to the dirt. Worm dirt LOL... Metals may be a bit better w/ its different combinations, but decomposition ensues none the less. In the situation of a buried safe or metal box of any sort buried a hundred or so years ago, with paper materials inside many things have to be established before opening to check contents. Or you will have worm dirt in a box.LOL

Go Up Go Down

I buried $600 dollars in a plastic vitamin bottle(impending divorce, she was emptying bank accounts), inside a sealable sandwich baggie, with cotton and mildecide. When I dug it back up 6 months later, it had green mold or mildew or something on it, was stinking really badly, and was starting to lose it's composure. I won't bury paper money again without really researching how to protect it.
