I recently started detecting and am really confused as to how to find a place to go.  It seems it is illegal in many locations to metal detect and most places are on private land.  Do you just call people out of the blue and ask to metal detect on their land?   Thanks in advance for any help.

I used the search function at the top right corner to find this gem from among our many previous posts on the subject.

I won't say it's the be all and end all, but it is a good start for you.    If you enter "getting permission" in the search box and search the entire forum, you'll turn up more.

Getting permission to hunt a place is a lot like getting job leads when you are unemployed.   You can start with your own your yard and then ask your friends, family, and neighbors if you can search their yards.   When they see that you aren't destroying your property or their's there is a good chance they might think of someone else who would help you with your hobby.
