Hi there eveyone, I just got my new metal detector and I'm looking for hint for some good places in the Chicago area to help get me started. Any ideas would be very welcome.

Hello Scott and  Welcome from upstate ny
Well if you have a yard that's a good place to start. You will find that a lot of peeps on this forum started this way,out the door and make a left or right and go man go.
If you have never detected before then may I suggest to make you a little test garden, plant a few coins and other metals in the ground at varying depths, label them and test your machine there.See what sounds from your machine are matching with the contents that is in that hole.Get to know your machine and what it's telling you.
Also at first once your use to  your machine and you go out on a hunt "dig all your hits" yes even the junk. This will give you a clue to what your machine is detecting.
This forum is a wealth of knowledge for the beginner, read through the post,go to advanced search and use that.If you have any questions just ask, there is a boat load of peeps on here that can help you out in your time of need.
Good luck with all that.... Waveing

Scott,  since you already had a new user introduction posted, I moved your post from there to here......that should cut down on the "hello's" from people who think they are welcoming someone who has not been introduced yet, but which don't really contain any answers to your questions.

To answer your question......generically---(Use the search function at the top right hand corner to search the entire forum for "Places to Hunt")----hunt parks (once you've determined there are no rules or regulations to prevent you from hunting there), the shoreline, the median strip in the boulevards,  the strip between the sidewalk and the street (especially in the older neighborhoods)....any place where people either gather or gathered and were likely to lose money (think of the kinds of places you have lost money and keys).

More specifically, go to the library and check out the LOCAL history books...the older the better.   Also read the old newspapers on line or on microfilm looking for where circuses, picnics, etc took place.

Scott

Im from From Winnetka.   Some old neighborhoods around the western suburbs have provided some decent silver for me in the past.  Winnetka and Kenelworth seem pretty fished out but sometimes you can find good stuff in folks yards if you ask for permission.

Good luck!
