I have been looking for Idaho state regulations for recreational gold panning and have not found anything other than for large operations.  Does anyone have any experience panning for gold in Idaho and can you tell me are there rules published anywhere on the internet?  if you have had any experiences with regulators and panning in Idaho, I'd like to hear about that too.

Perhaps this link will put you in touch with someone to answer that question for you! It does say "come join the fun and find some gold" at the top!

Thanks for the link, it looks fairly new.  I will try and contact them.

I have found some rules for dredging here:

But, I am just wanting to pan, so I hope I don't need a dredge permit.

Aha! - this is what I wanted to see, thanks.  I am packing my bags and heading to Idaho, where it seems prospecting is still allowed.

Where in Idaho are you planning on trying your luck?  Just remember to check for claims and land status before you prospect on any land.

You are right about checking claims, which I always do on the BLM LR2000 site, which I don't entirely trust so I always do a field check for claim posts and county records if I can find them.

As for where I would go in Idaho, I don't really know because I haven't done my research yet.  I have all winter to do my research because it is too late this year to get out there.

Have you any personal experience working in Idaho?

Just a few historic mining towns out of many more scattered across the state listed below. A little web searching should give you a pretty good idea where you might want to visit.

Most of these places are claimed up but there is a lot of mountainous and desert country open off the beaten path a bit. Also there was significant dredging around many of these towns and there are gemstones and fine gold still to be found in tailings.

If you are thinking about venturing into the upper central region be aware there is a large primitive area where vehicles of any kind are not allowed. Foot or horse only.

Idaho City
Featherville
Atlanta
Bay Horse
Custer
Silver City
Placerville
Centerville
Warren
Thunder Mountain
Yankee Fork area

Thanks for the tips.  I appreciate you listing the towns because that gives me a good place to start my research, which I have all winter to complete!
