Very true Homefire, the early hand dug tailings before 1900 were picked pretty clean. Many of the big tailings piles in Idaho City, Warren, Placerville, etc. came from the big dredges that worked the creeks and meadows after the rush days. They ran up till the thirties I've been told, when most everything came to a halt. Most of the people had already gone and those towns practically shut down overnight, although some like Idaho City have re-emerged as vacation cabin towns and have resteraunts and stores.
Still plenty of fresh spots where gold can be found so I don't spend much time on the tailings except to look for star garnets and gemstones. Too much hit or miss
By the way gold at 1800$ an oz works out for me about the same as a months wages
I know it's down a bit but still I don't mind a little shovelling in the woods as opposed to working a 9to5
