Very true Homefire, the early hand dug tailings before 1900 were picked pretty clean. Many of the big tailings piles in Idaho City, Warren, Placerville, etc. came from the big dredges that worked the creeks and meadows after the rush days. They ran up till the thirties I've been told, when most everything came to a halt. Most of the people had already gone and those towns practically shut down overnight, although some like Idaho City have re-emerged as vacation cabin towns and have resteraunts and stores.

Still plenty of fresh spots where gold can be found so I don't spend much time on the tailings except to look for star garnets and gemstones. Too much hit or miss Smiley

By the way gold at 1800$ an oz works out for me about the same as a months wages Smiley I know it's down a bit but still I don't mind a little shovelling in the woods as opposed to working a 9to5

I agree.  My own personal opinion is that the tailings are a waste of time compared to other places I could just go pan for a little color EVERY time.  I found no evidence that the tailings I worked had already been worked over by the chinese.  The piles were all still intact in the same slow curve as if the dredge had placed them there yesterday...very orderly and in a pattern.  You can see them from google earth by zooming in on Pioneerville.  With me, it just became more of a personal quest and in a way more fun to try and find that little quartz muffin stuffed with gold.  I do feel like everything on the surface of the piles has been picked thru by the casual prospector.  I found no evidence of a hard-core work underway other than my own.  Unless MD technology becomes really, really good..... and affordable, no-one knows for certain what lies in the middle and very bottom of those giant piles.

What was always fun for me exploring the tailings and dredge piles was looking for artifacts left behind by the old timers. Found some interesting things over the years. Nothing to get rich off of but fun to hang on walls or shelves.

I found a wrench one time in a pile and you could tell it was very old and most likely from the dredge.  It was way cool.  I gave it to the land owner who let me on his piles.  I wish now I had taken a picture of it.  Probably not worth a cent but it was still interesting looking.
