There are strict rules relatig to where you can metal detect, you always need the landowners permission also you need an understanding of the treasure act.
What I would suggest is you search for a metal detecting club in the area you are visiting and e-mail their Secretary and ask if you can join in a club event they are usually held at a weekend though some are held mid week, The secretary maybe able to put you in touch with retired members who could take you to club sites where you will have the opportunity to search without any problems
Plus you get to meet like minded individuals who may want the same favour in return one day?
