Just got a Garmin legend H for Christmas present.  Seems very heavy-duty and lots of features, but I hate the manual.  Will take longer to learn to navigate and realize full potential.  Will doubtless come in most handy for THing and boating.

I too am on the search for a gps and did a "google" search and found a comparison chart.  I looked at the different features which I absolutely wanted and first eliminated those models that did not have them, proritzed the other features and then compared prices.  For me the Garmin Dakota 20 seems to fit the bill
Don't forget to check sites like tigerdirect.com and half.com you can purchase a refurbished device cheaper and most have the same warranty
