i was looking at this one it wiould be great but the sensor only goes a depth of 8mtrs. the camera goes 30mtrs below but from what i read thats only underwater (30mtrs) not on land. Do you know if you can buy a sensor that can attach to it that goes more then 8mtrs.

Ground penetrating radar waves can reach depths up to 100 feet (30 meters) in low conductivity materials such as dry sand or granite. Moist clays, shale, and other high conductivity materials, may attenuate or absorb GPR signals, greatly decreasing the depth of penetration to 3 feet (1 meter) or less.

The depth of penetration is also determined by the GPR antenna used. Antennas with low frequencies of from 25 to 200 MHz obtain subsurface reflections from deeper depths (about 30 to 100 feet or more), but have low resolution. These low frequency antennas are used for investigating the geology of a site, such as for locating sinkholes or fractures, and to locate large, deep buried objects.

Antennas with higher frequencies of from 300 to 1,500 MHz obtain reflections from shallow depths (0 to about 30 feet), and have high resolution. These high frequency antennas are used to investigate surface soils and to locate small or large, shallow, buried objects, such as utilities, and also rebar in concrete.

It appears the deeper you go you lose resolution.....
The most powerful GPR I have seen are on whells or forklifted the the area of need...

Creolegirl, you are going to come up against the limits of physics here. Sad, but true. GPR is limited in two ways. The power has to be low because you have to transport it into the field. Make it too powerful (heavy) and the equipment has to be stationary. Just right GPR power and size make it portable enough to use with a computer but the depth is not what you are looking for.

Years ago, the method was to use a small charge of dynamite and listen to the return. No kidding. Today, ground penetrating sonar is used. They do not use the acronym GPS for that for obvious reasons of confusion with the navigation system. Sonar pings can be analyzed by a fast laptop with ease and will even detect underground caverns and rivers. The best place to read about them in the Nasa Tech Briefs archives - if you can access them. Nasa commissioned several studies of this technology to determine if planetary landers could use them to see underground on the moons of the large gas giants. My company bid on a few contracts for these. Unsuccessfully.

Sign up. It is free. Look around on the terms ground penetrating and see what you turn up. You do not have to want to build one but companies who have patented the process will probably be selling them. That is called connective research. You may not be able to understand the patents or the technology but knowing who is working on it will help get you going in the right direction.

Hi all,

New member here, just been doing some research into this GPR technology. Looks interesting so far, im sure it will grow through further research. What I can tell it that this equipment till now, that it has been quite useless in mineralized grounds eg. clays, iron, solid bedrock. Mixed reviews on this OKM manufacturer, so far.

Anyone used OMKs new equipment? (eg. eXp 4000, with attachments)

Does anyone think its worth trying this technology in Australias mineralized hard/rocky uneven grounds?

Anyone got any opinions on this attachment, for OKM products?

Hi there and Welcome DO NOT by any OKM products! This company's products are not recommended in any way. Infact they DO NOT sell any GPRs but way overprized Gradiometers only.

When wanting to buy a GPR better go for one of these companies:

GSSI, Sensor & Software, MALA

Best wishes,

Christian

What do you think of this equipment from GSSI, SIR-3000. Would it work in mineralized un-even ground, for the use of metallic element, such as gold. Looking at using this equipment with conjuction with Minelab metal detectors for shallow workings (6 foot max.).

Anyone?

The GPRI will work in any ground with varying reulst but does not "detect" metals. That is it will take an "image" of teh ground and the operator has to interpret the readings.

I would recommend buying a Minelab GPX 4000 or 4500 for Australian soi.s

i have tried using the exp4000 not long ago and didnt like it. the machine and the 3d software gave 2 different results. Not worth the money.

fails to give a price. What is the approximate cost of the basic unit and did you have any of the accessories that went with it?

Attached is a PDF of a patent for a GPR.
