Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone knows of any successful project of hooking up Speake FGM-3 magnetometers in a gradiometer setup directly to an Arduino or RasPi eradicating the need for a Speake SCL007 Chip ? Maybe even in conjunction with a DGPS/GNSS ? Any hints would be welcome.

Anything is possible with microcontrollers like the PIC (chip based) or Arduino (board based). The key issue is real time multitasking. Keep that in mind when playing with either. You must be able to control the outputs and inputs simultaneously as well as analyzing and displaying the information. Most of my designs use multiple processors in a single design. I have a very useful display module and a working TX/RX (Transmit/Receive) module. Marrying the two has been a fun experience. Making small changes means a varietal result.

I am not even close to being ready to share my work. There's just too much to do. Worse yet, I always develop a working specification of my project and this one keeps changing. It seems to change all by itself as I do my best to minimize the changes. I will tell you that it currently uses a spectrum of frequencies and a dynamic coil to keep things tuned. When I have it working to my satisfaction, you all will be among the first to see my work.

Thanks, Golddigger, for your reply. Yes "...control[ling] the outputs and inputs simultaneously as well as analyzing and displaying the information." is definitely the biggest challenge and I hope to be able to get a better grip on it using an Arduino or RasPi as my experience with PICs is virtually zero.

"I always develop a working specification of my project and this one keeps changing"

Haha .. I know EXACTLY what you mean. Have you considered an Agile approach ?

I am using the $9 CHIP computer on Outernet. Still checking it out. It has built in Wifi. I have it connected to a RTL-SDR and through a LNA to a patch antenna on 1.5 ghz. It is decoding the Inmarsat data and logging files to memory. Also runs the server and wifi.

Apologies for blowing the dust off an old topic but can anyone recommend any hints on how to combine the results from the FGM-3 sensors?
