The state by state treasure atlas by Thomas P. Terry is full of ghost town listings by the county.
Then try your local librarie,The History of County you are interested in and while you are there ask for a book called Place Names,it's a start.Last but not least is the internet,do a search for ghost towns you should find enough info to last a lifetime.So far for me the best towns are the ones you can't see any buildings are any clue that a town was even there.
I look at THing like this,if you can see it and it looks good,most likely its been hunted before.
Research is the key to finding anything!
