Hi has anyone from Georgia?  Going to Atlanta this summer, want to know do we need to get a permission to hunt in local park.  Thanks for any info.

I'm in Georgia, and certainly you need to check with the municipality where you want to hunt.  Georgia has a law on the books that forbids "prospecting on any publically owned lands or waterways".  While "prospecting" is not well defined under the law, it has never been challenged in court so you never know if a law enforcement officer will interpret metal detecting as prospecting, or if he'll wait for you to break out the gold pan and pick.  Also some of the individual municipalities within the state have written their own ordinances that either further restrict, or relax the state law, so it's not clear cut at all down here.  I don't bother with public areas at all any more, but I'm not into digging clad and high school class rings anyway.  I've got a few private property sites that I have the various owner's permission to detect and prospect on, and there's enough dirt and water there to keep me busy for the rest of my life.
