Hi, have you ever had this happen to you? Say you have something you want to divide into equal segments. Maybe it's a new meter scale, or just a sheet of paper you want to divide into columns. As an example let's say it's 5 inches wide and you want to have 5 one inch segments. That's easy. 5 divided by 1 is 5. So you draw a horizontal 5 inch line, and then draw 5 vertical lines 1 inch apart. Looking good right? Then you number the vertical lines 1 through 5. Perfect. Then you notice something odd. It says 1 through 5 at the top, but there are only 4 columns. WHAT? Must be the !/#$£¥₩&* ruler. What happened? Anyone?

Dusty Carl

A bad day at gold prospecting or metal detecting is better than a good day at work.

It's because a 4 column box has 5 lines. For 5 columns you need 6 lines. There is an extra line to border things on the opposite side of the starting line.

And then we have 4 or 3 boards in the stack. Which is it?

Nice one GD. I guess it depends on the amount of Guinness you just had. Grin  I remember seeing one like that with stairs leading around a castle and fountain. Sometimes you would be upside down.

The real answer is two. The top and bottom are the only complete ones.

Here is a picture of the column apparition
