Trying to build one

	Beginner would like to build Sandbanks PI Metal Detector « on: December 30, 2009, 09:11:58 PM »

Hi ,I'm a beginner electronic hobbiest and am interested in building the Sandbanks PI detector. What alternativess to the T1 Toko 87BX135 transformer do I have.
Any tips or help would be great.

There are other Transformers that will work as it only being used as voltage pump.

You could like Cornelius says and just use a second 9 volt battery.

I just sold a complete kit no long ago and have not heard from the gentlemen sence.

Some place I posted a link showing how to rewind your own.

I'll try to find it.

Aliman . Do you already have the complete schematic and parts list of the Sandbanks detector . If not , this si the first thing I would do . Try out You are not allowed to view links.

and look under their schematics . If you have the complete file let me know . I got a spare PCB for you if you wish . But ....only when you are prepared . I will instruct you how to use a seperate 9v battery instead of the transformer . Cornelius

Great response guys, thanks alot. Thats all great info, and I do have the complete Sandbanks
file Cornelius. I'm trying to gather up all the correct parts for this project, and I'm woundering if I should invest in a Breadboard to allow for final assembly testing, or should I just plop all the parts on to a PCB and hope for the best. As you can see I am a beginner, don't even have a Breadboard ! And Yes Cornelius that PCB offer sounds great.

Aliman . A breadboard is a means that is only used by somebody that cannot get hold of a PCB . Just use a pofessional PCB . Send me your postal address on my private E-Mail number alphaor@versatel.nl and I will send you the PCB . Let me know when you have received it and I will stear you around the transformer ( the transformer is not to he had anymore ) . It is a very nice detector and when it is put together the right way you will have a lot of fun with it . Cornelius

Load the PCB and do the testing as prescribed in the article. It provides a sequence and voltage checks to be made.

You will not need the parts making up the Voltage Pump if you take that route.

One word of caution . Although it looks like the Sandbanks is just another little easy to build PI detector it takes somebody with some knowledge to build it . You should also be handy witht the soldering iron . If not , try to get some help from somebody that has build electronic gadgets before and know what he is doing . I hope Ali will be able to do it . I am going to etch a PCB for him . Hope it is not wasted ! . Cornelius

Hi guys, thanks for are the help. Don't worry Cornelius I won't let you down, I'm 47 years young and had some electronics training in High School, wanted to be a Electronic Engineer, but my path changed and became a Licensed Auto Tech. I have been playing around with electronics ever since. Still a beginner in my eyes.
One question, I'm having trouble locating the E176 transistor, what would be a good substitute.
Again ,thanks for everybodies help, I'm sure I can accomplish this with all your guidence.
