Peter, where do you see any fighting? I see only discussion about ways to improve the forum. I see a few explanations about why the store isn't working yet. No fighting. Just discussion. What am I missing?

Go Up Go Down

Hi,

Many a time , i have found that one thing or another on this site that has took my interest and wanted to go for a snoop about a little more in depth, yet, am sure like others, it`s a case of ok where to look apart from the main archives and libraries, there are a wealth of other places to find good info, but its the knowing where the place is.

For example i may have an interest in a state in America or some part of Africa, but i do not have the knowledge of knowing what places are out there for even contacting without long searches on line.

So, my suggestion, since this is an international site, then perhaps, if users can or are willing to input places in there local areas of where good archived material or info is kept with address`s  or even links would help other users who are perhaps 1000`s of miles away.

In the long run, thunting then has an extenstive database of places to seek information. short term you have the main ones, and the specialist ones, but am sure as time passes it would build and expand as various topics and finds are brought up.

just a thought

states..yeah, but, what then? you see a topic about  lost mine or whatever...what local places are good to research a little further? it`s to limited at the moment on those sub topic`s

unless you are a seasoned knowledgable or methodical researcher? what then? where do you look? i wouldn`t know what the local newspapers were called back then? where would i get the info? etc etc

the search function on here is not going to help me,(for the times i have used it) so i need to go walk abouts on the net, hours later to find what i wanted.

example... or even what were the main drop off points for settlers? where are the records held for them? etc. am sure i would find them eventually, but does it not make more sense to bring these big collective sources into one area? help reduce each others time on anything that has caught thier attention on here.

it`s like many of you seasoned guys say..."ain`t nothing like local knowledge" well , thats the basis for the idea.

admittedly, it`s one big topic, and endless, but a base would be formed for kicking it off, and am assuming it would give here a better edge on other sites, in terms of informative info, more complete in a sense and balanced

it`s like the old map topic for use with google earth, building it up.

With the crazy amount of info that we sometime get posted , how would you suggest it is Cataloged and Posted?

Nothing is ever going to be at your finger tips no matter how it's posted.

It's going to take some effort to locate it and find.

It would help a lot if the search function was working properly. I've done some searches on stuff I know was posted here by me and can't find it until I browse for it.

Amen to that one, GD --- I've had exactly the same problem.  I go looking for something that I know either I or one of the other moderators posted 6 to 18 months ago which I know is the perfect answer for the question being asked, and I can't find it using search (even when I've got a good idea as to which board it was posted on).

It may be down to the database being too large for the search script.

In fact, I just tried it and got a database error for a response.

Hi,
i am aware not everything is at your fingertips, but i am also not suggesting along the lines and depths of british national archives neither with its millions of info.Nor am i asking for this site to hand me the info i want on a silver platter, but for simple direction as a helping guide, for whereever in the world, then it`s a good thing?

As for how.... The site already has the sub topics, like the states , where many a user comes from, so whatever links , addresses they are willing to input can be placed in one main topic board within that area. "sources/reference" perhaps another for the old maps. In turn this can be built on via forum chat.

Many a time i have read some of the lost mines, gangs, bandits stories, and users mention some newspaper article or mention some place where info is sourced,  can these, as they occur, not also be cut and added to a source site within each state. rather, even rummaging back to find it a year down the line etc.

as an example, since it`s literally right on my doorstep, and doubt anyone here knows about it, but it may be of use if someone was researching something specific, since it`s ment to be one of the oldest private libraries  1687 and is open to public

Even the likes of countries in Europe, how much info on here can be found via sources on this site? some sources may not even be online, but for location it`s a start.

it may not be extensive, but its a start in the right direction and perhaps help others realise just what actually is right on thier own doorstep while they pass it every day.
