I found this Penny in a role of dimes from a reserve bank.

I have sent photos to a few dealers who say it was Post mint damage and not a error coin.

I just can not figure out how to hell anyone could have done it.!!!!

It's like a penny was stamped on a dime size blank.

Note the lettering follows the contour of the edge. Idiot

What do you all think?

It looks like someone is trying to get the bank by shaving the edges of pennies to fit into dime wrappers. Just a guess, but thats what it looks like.

really because if they were being trimmed down the lettering would not be there my guess is that i dime blank probly fell in floor somone working there piked it up and thought penny so they threw in penny blanks then it got stamped and rolled and went to bank then to u u nedd to check to see if worth anything

Hi homefire,
It could be possible, that it is a mistake by the mint, Let me ask you this,
when you sent the pictures to the coin dealers and they said it was a post mint boo boo,
by any chance did they offer to purchase it from you?or did anyone ask you what you
are looking to get out of the coin. if any of these 2 questions come up you know that the coin has a value, now you just have to do the research to find out what it is. I hope this helps some what, Best Wishes..Rob

Ha! One dealer I showed it to in Tucson offered me $20.00 as I walked out the door! That was years ago!

The coin is 1976, I found it in a federal reserve role......Blue and White......of dimes all 1976!

I am sure of what I have but no one seems to think so.

Oh well! I'll keep plugging and see if it goes anyplace.

i had a similar penny! almost the same thing but mine was bent on edges more i sold mine for 200 maybe u would sell it for more ofcourse all depends on the buyer

Coin operated machines sometimes sense the weight of the coin and sometimes the size. Someone with a die press could cut pennies down to that size making them work like dimes in candy machines, parking meters and so on. Coin counters from vending machine collections won't know the difference either. The coin shows a bit of wear. Had it come from the mint like that it most likely would have been uncirculated. To me, this makes it a counterfeit coin rather than an error coin.

Another point: the die for the penny would have had to bend past 90 degrees on the edges to get raised letters on the front below the face of the coin. I don't believe the dies would bend... hardened to make multiple thousands before they wear out.
