I just purchased a hunting vest at Amazon for less than $30 shipping included. I had not thought of the first aid kit, but I can bring the one I have in my truck, which is also small and thus portable. You guys have given me great ideas. Thanks for sharing your experience with us novies.  Great

I received my hunting vest yesterday and immediately put it on for yesterdays hunt after work. It's nice to be able to put so many items in its pockets. One feels really comfortable.

Backpack. Good suggestion. I prefer a fishing vest personally, as the so cal desert gets very hot and I am not a big fan of being completely soaked in sweat with a backpack on. haha

Always carry at least 1 spare battery, if not 3. If you can, I suggest a solar cell charger. They are getting smaller and smaller these days. The offgrid backpack looks ok, just because it has multiple voltages able to be used. However the power rating on that thing is barely enough to charge a phone for 3 hours it seems. Another 5 years hopefully. Having a nice car setup would be good though, then all you have to do is hike to the car, recharge while having lunch and get back out there ASAP.

I wonder if anyone is incorporating solar cells or even emf gyros that accumulate and store energy from the motion in which one swings the metal detector? Kind of like those watches that are powered by movement.

And of course WATER: At least a gallon of water per person per day MINIMUM.

Food is usually a good thing to bring, maybe I am just always hungry. I also like to carry a small funnel with the smaller hole covered with a metal screen and 2 small bottles - one with distilled water the other empty(so I can put small items in the funnel, put the empty bottle under it, pour the water from one over the item and recover the water in the lower bottle to reuse later). Pen and paper is always handy. GPS unit, road maps, topos, cannabis, local history books, microfiche printouts, couple friends, magnetic wands(neodymium attached to broom stick), shovels, trowels, pliers, etc.
I use old prescription bottles with the sticker removed to store small items found. Wont bust open when shimmying down a ravine. Smiley
