Indeed, and FYI, New Mexico didn't become a state until 1917. Until then, it was a territory.

Arizona and New Mexico were both adopted into the Union in 1912.

A bad day at gold prospecting or metal detecting is better than a good day at work.

So is Alaska the 49th State and Hawaii the 50th State ?? Which Is why people refer to most of the US as the Lower 48 ??

To my knowledge, they don't. The Contiguous 48 is proper but they would be misstating it to call them the Lower 48.

So is each State listed in the order of when they were founded or does it not work like that, ??

That's right as there are no "upper 48" states. However, Canada is still 1/2 of North America. Lets not slight our good neighbors to the North.

I was having trouble keeping up with the 50 States and now I have to work out Canada relates to the U.S. before the boundaries  were set out.

Not to confuse matters more, but we also have other places we call "protectorates" that we supply security to. Some, like Puerto Rico want to become a state, but not everyone else does. Our money is Legal tender there, they speak our language, pay income taxes, but are not allowed to vote in our elections. That's a  . Like Guantanamo is. 'Nuff said. Don't want to get in over my head.
