Karl!   I fogot to tell you about the Hot Springs.   May be good after you drive this far.  Just about 25 miles north of Deming.   The City of rocks is cool too.

Just three miles from the Springs you can stop off at  the city of Rocks.

Your still within 30 miles of Deming off HY 180

Best to shoot down I-10 to Deming and Head north on 180.   Faster.  You can come down I-25 and jump to Silver City and down  180 but boy it's a Long hall.

Those attributes should be made a requirement to get your degree.

A bad day at gold prospecting or metal detecting is better than a good day at work.

Homie. Once we figure out  for sure what dates will be going and what  route .
I'll let you know .  We're looking  at  staying  at  all  national  and state parks .
wife wants  to  do the trip in two  weeks .  I'd  like  4 weeks  to do it in.
I'd  also  like  to  meet  as  many  members  along the  way  as possible .

But will see how  things  work  out . We might have  to  push it back another  year.

I understand that one.    Can't remember last road trip we had.    Also have Poncho Via's State park 30 miles from here.  First time a Air Plane was used in war.

Pancho Villa State Park is definitely worth checking out.  It is at Columbus which is the small town Pancho Villa actually raided.  The 13th Cavalry had a small garrison located on the outskirts of Columbus prior to the raid.   This was one of the major centers of resistance and the post ruins are included in the park, as is the Air Field Homie mentions which was established after the raid as part of Mexican Punitive Expedition under Black Jack Pershing.   Between the original post ruins and the air field, you'll also see the remains of the first US Army Combat motor pool including the "first grease rack" built for combat support.    Unless the town has changed a whole lot in the last 20 years, it is REAL easy to put yourself back in time to 1916.

The rockhound in me really liked Rockhound State Park.   The history nut in me was equally impressed with Pancho Villa State Park and the small museum that was located in the old Columbus railroad station when I visited the town sometime around 1995.   Not to mention there was a little hole in the wall restaurant across the street from the American Legion hall that served some of the best Mexican food I've ever had and I've had some d*mn good Mexican food.   Hard for me to decide whether I like RSP or Columbus better, but I lean towards Columbus.    (Still haven't made it to the Deming museum, though.....that is definitely on my short list).

And while I will clearly defer to Homie as the hometown expert,  unless he says otherwise I would recommend La Bella Luna in downtown Deming for lunch or dinner.   It is located in an old bank, complete with vault.   Last time I was there, it had different owners and a different name (Palma's Italian Grill), but I understand the food is still worth stopping for.  (Plus it's real near the Deming Museum).

If you get to or near Phoenix, I'm pretty sure we can arrange that
