Detecting Howdy all , I am in Abbotsford BC. About an hour east of Vancouver BC,  I just purchased my first detector  an ace 250 . Now before i handed over the cash i told the salesman i wanted to hunt coins in parks and beaches  here in BC.  He said its all open here for detecting just fill in your holes and don,t make a mess all will be fine . He also didn,t tell me that our canadian coins do not register the same as the american coins do on the detector. Anyway i was in the same shop 2 weeks latter and was talking to the repair tech for detectors and he told  me that park detecting was band here. I went home and called the city  and they said it was ok to park hunt Huh???  But do they realize there is slight digging involved?    Any input would be great.

Since you checked with the city and they said detecting was okay in the local parks, go with that.  You might ask a local cop on the street, also.  Tell him what the city told you, too.  Plus, you could go to the city and get a written permission note to carry with you if you have any more doubts about it.   Detecting  Also be sure to learn proper digging techniques for recovering coins and jewelry.  Practice them in your own yard first until you learn to dig correctly and leave no sign of your being there afterward.  Practically any coin hunting book will have a section on proper recovery techniques.   Wise

Go Up Go Down

Greetings from Mill Creek Washington, just south of you pulltabpete.
I have heard from several people about regulations for various places (sometimes right, sometimes wrong)
but I have found it best to contact the group responsible for the best information.
I usually start with the government agency, such as Parks and Recreation, and then
speak with the local law enforcement, who always(so far), have said that whatever Parks & Rec say, is good for them.
For example, in Snohomish County parks, MD is only allowed on sandy beaches, no turf detecting.
Always best to ask, than to get into trouble, which could be costly, especially if your MD is confiscated.

Go Up Go Down

Hello pulltabpete,

I did research on that before I even considered which detector I wanted/would need.

In Ontario for my city:

I called city hall and the engineer said the only place he doesn't want MD activities is in the 'brown fields', I suppose it goes with-out stating the obvious.
He recommended I search:
-street construction sites after the workers go home for the day
-the riverbank
-the dikes
He wouldn't have charges pressed at sites like that, gerenerally, the police will leave you to your detecting. First time caught at somewhere I shouldn't be he would let me off with a stern warning from the city.
-call Parks and Recreation and see what they say

Parks and Recreation may or may not issue a permit, it's at their discretion. Undecided If you hunt w/o a permit they may or may not press charges, it's at their discretion.

Cheers,
Barb

Well  i have called many people on the" rules issue" and from what i have been told .......detect where you want but no digging and don,t destroy any grass or sod.I  have recently bought a pro pointer and now i more or less surface detect (2 inches or less) i can extract a coin without digging or damage. I scan the wood chips in play grounds with great success  and i can dig there if needed.I also show people how much nasty junk metal i have found in the play area and remind them i am making it safer for the kids to play . so far so good.

Awwww, you get to pop my 25th post  Wink I'll never forget my 25th.

Rules change all the time. If the community is not reporting you to the police, you're not being distructive (which was the main point of the ENG I chatted with), you stay out of restricted areas, and you clean up after yourself, I think you can Detecting and all will be happy. Just remember, there is ALWAYS that one that likes to stir the 'pot'  Embarrassed

Cheers,
Barb

Good point , i like to detect the high traffic places when there are fewer "experts watching" such as early morning or late evening . I make a point of not having a digging  tool (shovel) with me , shovels seem to attract attention in a bad way.All of the city officials  i have talked to have different ideas and concerns , i wish they would watch the how to cut a plug video or the popping method to understand that it can be done  without any damage to the property .

Just gOOgle the name of the Park, Regulations and Rules.

You will get the same.

Look for any rules on Metal detecting and follow the same!   Not Hard!

Pssst...folding army shovel Shocked

I think you're doing it right. If you have one of 'those' phones - internet access. Set yourself up some of those short videos and show them to the person.

homefire: It is different in Canada. That's why we have detector envy. I look at footage of MD from the USA and want to move there. We would never get away with doing parks as Americans can Embarrassed

Cheers,
Barb

Not Different!  You have Rules and Regs just like down Yonder!

If they don't state them they don't exist!

Give me a Name of any park and I will show you what they have!
