Go Up Go Down

In the early to mid 1800's there was alot of construction, be it dams, lock, canals, roads etc happening here. The majority of the jobs were paid out in U.S. silver halves to the workers. The coins were brought up from the U.S. after payment was received from England, word has it that the coins were loaded into 1/2 size oak barrels.

My question is, does anyone one know if these barrels were mint filled or bank filled? Circulated vs non-circulated.

oh lol, sorry veryone, my name is Jon, new here and there is some free time for me to start doing some research into 1800's construction combined with some treasure hunting.

Cheers and thank you for reading my thread.

Jon

thanks Seldom, I was thinking the same, as England would not bring in a middle man, hence dealing directly with the FEDS on a percentage basis.  I'm curious to see what other ideas come up here.

Thank you for reading and ur reply, cheers.

This is an interesting subject keep us informed on what you find out. Now on a related subject while your researching keep track of any camp sites you come across. An old partner of mine hunted old railroad camps back in the 60's and 70's he found many small caches hide by workers who either got killed or forgot where where they planted it who knows for sure. Just keep that in mine while your looking for the big one the little ones pay the bills.

hmmmmmmmmm, Seldom, you and I think alike, what you just said is exactly where my mind is at, truth and deduction at work here.

Back in the day the worker would not take the time of day to bank his earnings, when there was rum and whiskey at hand. The general contractor of the day would always try to make his money back times.......triple with supplying the drink. Hmmmmmm brings on a different light to where the sights should be set eh lol.

Cheers and I pick up a new detector tomorrow, whats the thoughtshere?

Gtax550 versus Atgold.

I am not sure what kind labors they had in Canada but I have had very good luck hunting the camps where Chinese folks lived seems they did not have as many vices as some and hide their money more offend.

Apparently the building of the forts along the St. Lawrence into Lake Ontario has alot of grounds where there are roads and paths no longer used for over a hundred years that hold in time many artifacts and bounty either lost or placed, so a quest for old roadways and camp maps should be archived to find some good places to begin looking. I heard about the hiding of wealth by the chinese as they were in a foreign country and lack of vices combined with lack of foreign trust made them bury vs spending or banking.

I'm not sure I agree with Seldom on this one.   There's no real reason why one of the BIG banks or even one of the big private financiers could not have been the source.   And England would have no problem dealing with the likes of JP Morgan who literally bailed out the US government in 1895.   In a later time, I'd go with the government answer.  But since you're talking mid to late 1800's I wouldn't rule out private financiers.

Good point BA banking in the mid 1800's is not my strong suit.
