I am totally new to metal detecting and am interested in discovering where the law says I can and cannot practice my hobby. I read a report of a study which appears to refer to finds of "heritage property" and underwater historical treasure, but does not specifically refer to "recreational" metal detecting on public property such as beaches and places where people gather. I understand there are probably special regulations regarding provincial, municipal and state parks but am not sure how I can find all this information.
Here in Nova Scotia the laws seem to apply to "treasure", which implies hoards of valuables and sunken treasure found on wrecks under the ocean. The study report mentioned above is an attempt by the provincial government to modernize and update the many incomplete and convoluted laws which were transplanted from mother Britain many years ago, and which are difficult to apply clearly in today's world.
Any ideas on how to research this topic?
