From anywhere in San Diego, go west.

Welcome from Australia!

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Got a whole house there but it's occupied. Oddly enough, we stay at a hotel or with family when we're there.

My answer was cracking wise but that's actually close to the truth. Any beach has potential there. A tip for you. Two, actually. The Silver Strand Beach is so named because of the strands of silver wire that wash up from a century ago wreck that carried rolls of silver wire. The wires are somewhat corroded but they do add up. Check any wire you find. If it's magnetic, most likely it's from a sparkler. If not, it could be silver.

The second tip is to go to the dog beach in Ocean Beach, north side. Where the canal empties into the ocean, there is a huge fan of alluvium that comes from the desert and it is gold bearing. Flour gold, yes, but it adds up. Over a summer I would collect more than 5 ounces back in the 1980s. Don't worry that it has been cleared out because every spring brings new alluvium and new gold. Just wade out to the rivers of black sand with a gold pan and small shovel, dig down a few inches to solid black sand. Pan your heart out.

Five ounces today would sort of pay for a nice vacation in San Diego. Gold pans are around $10.00 each and the whole family can join in. Even the dog.

Try under Torrey Pines bridge or on the edge of Del Mar. Very wealthy areas with lots of people dropping things.

I would actually suggest starting in Oceanside and following the train tracks south. In Oceanside, they are often pumping sand in front out in the ocean to the beach - I can only assume thar be riches in them thar sands. Smiley
