Kossee, Texas,

A successful ranger named John Hightower, and his wife, lived in the town of Kossee, Texas, during the late 1800s. Their ranch was located south of town. It was a known fact that Hightower was making money through livestock sales. He kept a safe in his home with money for operating expenses, but he is believed to have cached the greater part of his earnings somewhere near his house. This house was still standing in the late 1950s.

John made periodic trips to a large ravine near where he lived, usually after dark. After having been seen several times going or coming from this ravine, Johns neighbors began to suspect that he was burying part of his money somewhere in the area. At that time, anyone who had any money kept it at home or buried it.

John Hightower died about 1920. His wife died a year later. For years it was local talk in the neighborhood that Hightower had hidden his money near his home. It is a known fact that he was well-to-do for the times and did not keep any money in a bank. This is a very good location to check out since as far as it is known, no searching has been done.

interesting story seldom, always love to hear another local Texas story, where did this one come from?  may have to add it to my long list of stories im looking into, have taken a little break from research, and been itching...ok, chomping at the bit to continue my research on stuff, just have to find the time!! ugh...maybe i shouldnt add any to my list right now, but i cant resist...gotta know more!!

i hear ya! whoever said homebuilding was slow these days...hmm, well, i am in TX, which still boasts fairly strong numbers compared to the rest of the states...glad to be busy though, just wish i had more to show for it 

just read your post tonight, and have already found some genealogy links supporting a Hightower family in Kosse at this time...I guess, as any other hunter/researcher(hobbyist or otherwise) i am struggling with a pile of stories, and making priorities!

funny how they run together over time, and you start placing players into opposing positions in different stories...all this while i am watching the discovery channel, a show on searching for Amelia Earhart...the confusion boils!

Plus the more you look into one area of the country the more leads that come to light. While searching for info about the civil war guns in Anderson we found leads on several other caches 2 were recovered and 2 others show promise just need the time.
Hint: I keep an index card for all leads with info on where the lead came from plus amount value etc. If I have a research file on the treasure it also has a number that will correspond with card.
