I am new to the world of metal detecting. I have not yet purcahsed one and am currently looking. I have found an BH Pioneer 202 for less than $100 and am curious to know if this is a good detector.
I will be using it mostly for gold.
Or does anyone have any suggestions on what to use as a beginner?

thats not a detector for gold, although it will find rings and jewelry easily. Read these forums, you havent given enough info on what your using it for. If your searching for nuggets in gold country, dont buy that. If your new to detecting, BUY THAT!! Then go use the hell outa it, you cant go wrong with a BH as a starter detector. I'd venture to say that most people nowdays have started with and or still use BH, I know I use mine and Ive been doing this for over 31 years.

As stated, you could do better with your money.

But then again Sargent, You do with what you have.

For a few dollars more you could have a heck of a better detector.

What are you thinking of hunting?

Coins?

Relics?

Gold?  BH 2o2 runing at 6khz is NOT a Gold machine.  If your looking for a Nugget machine you want one runing 15Khz and Up!

Beaches, gold drops (Rings, and Cools Stuff), coins?


There is a pile more to the picture the you would think.

What are you willing to spend?

What countries are you thinking of hitting?  Yes that plays a game too.

Ex TSgt Detector Dude has spoken. LOL!

Thanks for the info. That does provide me with a dicision. I am using it for finding gold nuggets and smaller gold. So I guess I will have to continue my search for a different detector.

we are mainly searching old dredge piles and mine tailings. I live in Idaho and we have numerous spots to hit. Have also found out there are some areas that may contain meteorites. I am willing to spend between $100-300. cheaper would be better right now. we are looking to start soon, and mabye after some good finds and a little luck I can upgrade to something better.

Your going to be pressed finding a good used gold machine for that range.   

I would look for a name brand detector running 15khz or more with manual ground balance.

yep, good advice from both of you. For the price (more than what you wanted to spend) I think its hard to beat the fisher gold bug, or teknetics model for gold, and they both have great reviews from their users.
