Bounty Hunter 840, + non working BH 840,  Bounty Hunter Tracker 2-D/707, BH Lone Star,  BH Tracker IV, and MD-3005 (Harbor Freight)

Go Up Go Down

I just read on another thread about someone who had a Bounty Hunter 840 metal detector that the sound continued and the meter needle was 'pegged'.  I have this same problem.  Does anyone know anybody who can properly repair this detector at a reasonable price?  I have in the past few years talked to a couple of people who said that they could repair it; but with little or no guarantee.  I used this detector during the early '80s a lot.  I really loved it.  When it went 'haywire', I bought a Bounty Hunter Tracker 2-D/707.  I don't care that much for the Tracker.  I was so used to the 840 that I would really like to have it working again.  Because of job and family health issues, I haven't used a detector much since about 1983 or 84 (?).  I have about  600 coins that I kept that I found with the 840 (wheat cents, pre 1950 nickels, silver dimes, and silver quarters.)  I have found dimes over 4 inches deep with it using headphones.
On the other thread, an email address was posted in 2010, about someone who had a manual for the 840; but I always got a 'failure of delivery' notice each time (2) times that I tried to send an email.  I would greatly appreciate any help that anyone can give me.

Here is a link for the 840 user manual

Now in my opinion I suggest you forget about the 840 and look for a new detector maybe a Garrett 250 or something along that line

I can't get the link to come up.  No, if I can't get the 840 repaired properly, I'll just have to get used to the Bounty Hunter 2-D.  I'm an 'old-timer' and don't like change.  Just give me my old one!           Thanks for the help, I do appreciate it.

On your other thread you wrote "I'm way behind, and have a lot of catching up to do" The best thing you can do to catch up is to update your tools.

If you tell use what it does or not we may be able to guide you to a working detector with just a few checks.

WHOA!!  Must be the old age!  I didn't realize that I didn't tell what the detector was doing.  When I turn it on and set the adjustments, I only get a few seconds before the sound goes high and the needle pegs.
I don't know how much detecting I will be doing.  I am 71 and have COPD.  I can walk, do yard work, etc. IF I am really slow and relaxed at it.  That makes detecting sound like a lot of fun and get some exercise at the same time.  As I said, I really loved this old detector and THINK I will remember most of the set up when/if I get it fixed.  I don't really like the newer types of detectors.  A friend had a Bounty Hunter Red Baron.  I tried it a few times; but didn't like it.  I have the Tracker 2-D, but don't really like it either.  I'd rather have the old 840.  Yes, if someone knows something to look for that might cause this problem, I would really be appreciative and very excited.  I have a little experience with volt/ohm meters, etc.  I haven't taken it apart (yet); hadn't even thought about it until the last few days.
Thanks to everyone for the comments.

Are you pressing the tune button when you turn it on?
