I'm not keen on Lithium batteries either. I fly RC planes and the lighter LiO batteries are great for weight but in order to get the best result, you have to go straight from the charger into the air or you lose time. They're really bad on retention of charge. Without them, we would still be using only fuel power only so there's a tradeoff. I keep my new Eneloop (brand name of low discharge NiMh batteries) in the trunk for weeks without any noticeable drop in power. Their extremely high capacity make for long runs. I still carry a couple of extra sets of batteries plucked straight from their chargers just in case.

Kw325, have you given any thought to an external battery pack? A belt pack of really high capacity NiMh batteries to replace your two 9v batteries would give you months of use between recharging.

Very interesting...new to the hobby and didn't realize I could do such a thing.
I'm assuming it would be a semi-costly initial expense that would end up cheaper overall, correct?
So just research external battery packs through Bounty Hunter or would some be universaly adaptable?
Thanks so much

You could build your own easily using Radio Shack battery packs and a plastic box to keep them on your belt. Eight AA batteries for each 9v and a spring cord between the detector and your belt pack would do the trick. You'd get HOURS and HOURS from that.

I've done the same more then a few time with PI detectors that munch batteries most well.

Only Problems I had was like your head phones that I seldom use, your tethered to the detector if you put it down.

I used a small Lead Acid battery in a fanny pack on my side.

But like GD said, you can run for days and not worry about running out of juice.

Sorry, no. My goodness. I'm a designer. I build only a few of my designs. This is one I haven't built - just conceptualized. Give it a go. You can do it.

Good source for cheap alkaline 9 volt battery's "Sunbeam brand" is dollar store and 99cent store! Got 2 9 volts for a dollar as compared to 2 coppertop 9v for $10 @ Kmart.Nicads have slightly less voltage and when they are close to the end the current shuts off quickly.Lithium polymer are the new "thing" for model airplanes and have ten times the capacity of a nicad so if done properly this would power a detector for ? Depends on the current draw @ 9 volts.I'm a tech so I'll keep you posted on tests! for now 1 dollar batteries are the deal Great

Be aware that Sunbeam are not alkaline batteries and thus they won't last long. Actually not even they last in a Garret pinpointer. My own experience  Wink

Yea thats bad advice you need to stick with alkaline batteries and Sunbeam are not alkaline batteries they are cheap knock offs.
