When I read the subject line, I thought that Rocky Terrain should go up against Apollo Creed since he's pretty old by now.
Kidding aside, what you might be encountering is mineralized sand. If you are at a lake shore, for example, bring along a plastic pail and shovel your sand onto that bucket while it is upside down. Keep heaping it on until you have a good sized mound and see how your detector reacts. Also, keep in mind that deep, larger objects like aluminum cans can often sound like a coin and your machine can interpret it as one. Don't give up. You'll figure it out and in the end, you will be a better detectorist for it.
