Have no idea if it works or not when turned off !! all I know I have found items with it and Thomas said when I was a dealer that it ran off voltage and it wasn't patiented . So It may or may not work for anybody. I believe the voltage was something like 1.4 volts for gold and 1.7 volts for silver,don't remember. All the junk throwed in side was to throw off anybody as to how it worked and was made which was simple I  guess.
