Do you have a pic?  What's a soil knife?  Folks here use shovels, spades, bowie knives, I found a regular small hand spade on a long pole, and I got shovels, spades, pocket knives, anything that will make a hole.  The main thing is that we ALWAYS re-fill the hole and leave as little evidence as possible a hole was even there.  Oh and welcome aboard!

stevieo, if you use the search box at the top right and enter "digging tools" and then search the entire forum, you'll find lot's of discussion on lots of digging tools.  A lot of us, including myself, use an Ames Planter's Pal (usually available at Lowes).  It's a "poor man's" Lesche with one side edge serrated and the other not, and two sharp points at the bottom......even has a built in depth guide and a flathead that can be used for pounding.
