Go Up Go Down

Hi all,

Just asking for some advice with regards to detecting beaches Detecting.

I just bought my first, what i'd call a "Proper" metal detector  Cool, A Garrett Ace 200i (but advertised as a 300i in the picture Pray. If it is what i suspect, i got a 300i for a REALLY good price! Kiss ) - However i'm still awaiting for it be delivered in the post .

I have just watched some youtube vids etc on the detector and it seem it was not the best choice when it comes to beach detecting.

The detector comes with a 7"x10" Concentric PROformance coil. All well and good for coin shooting and relic hunting around parks and farms, but i heard it is not so good in mineralised ground and salt water, such as beaches. Is this true?

The question is: Is it worth while to also buy a 5"x8" DD PROformance coil for this machine, or larger, for beach detecting as i have heard that DD coils are less suseptible to ground mineralisation and salt water, giving clearer signals in these types of zones. Is this also true?

Yes i know it is not ideal taking a Garrett Ace metal detector to the beach as its main housing is not waterproof, however the coils are and its a risk i'm willing to take. I'm also not intending to take it paddling into the sea or rock pools as it will be game over if i drop it..

Many thanks in advance for all your inputs and feedback.

congratulations on you new detector Smiley
Just LEARN how to use it before start changing things.
the detector will talk to you you need to learn to listen.
OK NO and i mean NO single frequency VLF detector will work 100% on wet salty mineralized sand.or salty water.
some will be better than others.never had an ACE but i know even the Garrett's AT has difficulties on salty wet soil.
stay on dry sand and you will be OK you got a nice machine.
my 2c worth of info  :Smiley

Thanks for the information and guidance nickel_n. Much appreciated  Pray.

I'll run the machine stock for now and learn how it reacts in  different situations and settings, as you suggest. I'm really looking forward to see how it does.

Just need to get out there and get swinging it.  Detecting

Hopefully it will find more than my old Dario VLF entry level detector from the 90's that cost me £40GBP new. That thing is a brick that takes 3x9v batteries to keep it singing. It's amazing that the Garrett only uses 4x1.5v AA batteries. It will be interesting to see how they compare regards depth and detection. I'm sure the Garrett will be far better in comparison.
