What's a good detector, that won't breal the bank? Have 3 detectors now, but they were bought for nugget shooting in AZ. Don't want to chance the wetness at the beach. Detecting

Im looking at the aquapulse and the Minelab Excalibur II. They are both over $1000. I'm going to learn how to scuba dive and go wreck diving. It's all in what your looking to do

Thanks guys. I've been looking at used Excalibur , and also at Fisher 1280-X. Both seem to get great reviews. I can get one just serviced by Fisher, with 1 year warranty, for $360.00??? Will be using on beach and in the surf, at Outer Banks. Anyone have reason not to buy the Fisher? Detecting

well not familiar w/ Fisher, other than reputation. But for the cost and warranty it's a third of the excal, Give it a try. Good luck.

Don't get a 1280-x if you want to hunt in salt water...they say it's good in salt water but I had a new 1280-x several years ago and it wasn't nearly as good as a pulse detector for salt water and the Excalibur by Minelab is way better machine for around 1000 bucks or maybe a bit higher. 1280-x is best for fresh water...in fresh water I'd still say a Excalibur or a CZ-20 or the newer CZ-21 by Fisher. I used a CZ-20 in the past and that unit was a hot machine with lots of depth and worked fine in salt water also...but not that 1280-x........keep in fresh water with a 1280-x. I found no gold with my 1280-x in salt water...but with pulse I found some nice ones.

Treasuremomo is right - the 1280X is a single frequency machine and thus has trouble in salt water - especially in the shallow surf. It may do OK in the deeper water where the sand is not shifting back and forth around the coil, but that may also just be advertising hype. On the other hand, the CZ-20 and 21 are both dual frequency detectors and they are locked in the saltwater mode. They are designed to be used in both fresh and salt water. They are all solid machines and designed to be used in the water down to 250 feet. They can be hip, chest, or stem mounted and are deep target seekers. I also had a CZ-5 some time ago (basically the same machine designed for land use and with an analog meter). It was an excellent machine, I got rid of it to go digital, and there are many a day that I think I will some day go back to it or my other favorite analog metered detector, a Whites XL PRO. While for the most part both good machines I ended up trading the Fisher CZ-20 for and Excalibur. He didn't like the sounds of the Excalibur and I didn't like how the CZ-20 was in my area with lots of iron. If you can, see if you can try both of them out from someone who has one. Perhaps at a club meeting. To me, the Fisher liked iron to much for my taste and the Excalibur walked right thru it. I have a Soverigen Minelab also and a 2500 Garrett.

For freshwater, as much as I like my Excalibur, my Tiger Shark is a better unit in fresh water for small gold. Salt water in this area the Tiger was useless.... Buying used at good prices you can afford to try them all and sell them for what you paid for them if you don't like it...

The rest of it is personal taste and what you get used to.....
