| Definitely a good tip, that us honest people wouldn't necessarily think of (which is why your friend had to give up the ring).

If the indeed it was that person's ring, a finders fee should have been included. The idea of calling a cop to have him arrested smacks of a lie being told by the supposedly owner. I would not have given it to him under that condition and called the police myself to tell them that someone was trying to extort me. Remember possession is 9 tenths of the law and he would have had to prove ownership other than just a vocal acclaim. But yes it is sad but true, that it is safer to not tell anyone about your finds. When you get home with it and you feel compelled to find an owner I recommend then that you do so. Safer too. That is what I would hope someone would do for me as well.
Sorry about posting on an old quote BA, But I am not sure if any person as voiced an opinion on this situation since then. Probably should have started a new topic.

I liked all the water tips. I will use some of them if I ever get to the lakeshore again. Our lakes here are federal or state parks now and a window sticker must be purchased and is good for only a year on state parks. A senior lifetime pass can be purchased for federal parks, but I don't believe they allow detecting in federal parks anyways.
Hazards of living in the desert I guess. :-
What I like to use on dry land are little red flags with a wire post that you just push into the ground. Joggers can see them too. You can make them yourself, or purchase them.

A bad day at gold prospecting or metal detecting is better than a good day at work.
