Go Up Go Down

Yesterday a woman approached me while detecting on a local beach she seemed quite distraught and upset "Excuse me, excuse me have you found any jewellery?"  "No" was my honest reply I then asked her if she had lost something which was the impression I got from the way she looked and was talking. Her whole attitude then changed from this state of agitation to one of casual interest about stuff you could find when detecting on a beach. I might be being paranoid but I bet if I had found something and shown her there would have been some sort of story about thank goodness you found it It's mine/my husbands ring or what ever. I would have been quite happy to help her look if she had lost something as at that time I had found nothing but trash later I found 2x1p 1x50p and that after we had 40 mile an hour winds the day before I thought I would be on to good finds.
This may be a cautionary tale when detecting about finding things  for my on part I think if I'm approached in future by anyone asking if I found jewellery and if I had found something I think my first question will be what have you lost can you discribe it?
I would be happy to give stuff back to owners or go and try help them find something but would not like to feel like I've been conned on the beach.

Yep, there?s a lot try it on, if you say yes, then it?s may I see it, and then it?s oh yes, that?s mine, I lost it this morning/yesterday/two days ago, and ask for it back. You can guarantee it?s the most expensive piece you have too.

Always ask for a description before showing anything !!  Wise

Hello Dave,

I bet you are right! She would have come up with some sort of story, lurking at your finds.

Best wishes,

Christian

Ya know, you get the same questions all the time.  What are you looking for?  Have you found anything?  That woman's question sounds a little out of the ordinary to me.  Sounds to me like she was trying to trick you into giving up any goodies you may have found.  (Beotch!) Angry

About 2 wks ago a female rushed up telling me that, if I'd found a gold necklace, it was hers. I asked her what it looked like and the answer was a plain gold necklace. I hadn't found it and, when I asked her where in the area she might have been when she lost it, she just darted off. First thoughts are always to help someone, but I think both of you offer good advice. Sue

Go Up Go Down

On the other hand, a young woman in a business suit holding her shoes in her hand approached me telling me of a tale of romance in the sand dunes where she lost her wedding and engagement rings. After asking me politely if I would help her to find them, she showed me the area where they were lost. Almost an hour later following a thorough search of that spot, nothing. I asked her what she'd been doing there and she told me that her and hubby had gone there with a bottle of Champagne to celebrate one year of bliss. We exchanged phone numbers and I promised to look around more.

I went to a relatively high point and saw a dune cut that had a smoother appearance and went there. Sure enough, a blanket had been laid there and there was even a rather suggestive dip in the sand. Oh, the mind plays movies from the smallest detail. Anyway, within 5 minutes I had found both rings along with a nice, heavy 18k gold bracelet that wasn't hers. Must have been my instant reward from karma.

That bit of beach sounds like it could do with regular visits, if people keep loosing stuff there. I know I found a lot of coins in one place and I regularly go back and it keeps getting topped up.

You should keep this in mind when digging. They could just sit back at a distance and watch you. When they see you make a find then they do the "approach". I usually try and keep my recoveries "low key" just in case someone is watching. Great
