R.I. beaches

Hi Everyone
 Well we finally made it to the beach, this being the first time any of us have ever been MDing, it was quite a scene. All of our equipment is brand new, we are just learning our MDs, looking just like newbies! My first experience with another hunter came when we went back to the car for lunch, an old timer was walking through the parking lot, seen us, and came right over started talking to us, it was great. The guy had so much info about the area i had to slow him down to take it all in. That in itself made my day! I couldn't believe how helpful he was to us. The day was beautiful, although a little breezy, 15mph wind off the water. We found nothing of value, but i did feel good about taking some trash off the beach. My Titan 2000XD did fine, i had no problem with it, other than the first timer stuff (alot of false signals at first), it did take me about 2 hours to really start to feel confident about what the MD was telling me, and then i started to hit real targets (junk). Stillsearching, welcome..........it's called paying your dues.   Like everything else, metaldetecting takes practice and patience.  You guys are making a good start of it.   Stay positive and work on the basics and you guys will soon be finding plenty.

The beaches there are small and rocky but have always been good for an old coin mixed in among the new ones. Be careful of the locale though because there are historic markers there which means a radius of clearance where that zone becomes protected. A phone call can save you lots of grief. I envy you your time there. Good luck and Happy Hunting!

stillsearching, congrats on your first hunt...It's been a little over 25 years since my first hunt with a metal detector...and believe me, there's going to be a learning curve on some things and you'll learn what to do and what not to do as you go along...some advice to you: Learn where it is legal to search and not legal to search in your area and by all means, Cover up your excavations after you recover an item...thanks for showing interest in this great hobby! GOOD LUCK! Oh, and one last tidbit: some folks start off with a beginners type detector...as I think the Titan 2000 is--that is fine for a beginning, but you may find that after a while you will want to upgrade to something a little more substantial and stable such as one of the units made by one of the major manufacturers such as White's, Fisher, Garrett, Tesoro, or Minelab--and some other brands that usually make a product that does a little better in the field. Read this forum and you'll begin to see folk's writing and photos of their detectors and you'll see some of the good units detectorists use.
