Go Up Go Down

I tried detecting on a beach for the first time today. The dry sand above the water line had a number of hits though half of them beeped then didn't then did and then didn't again. Some I just couldn't seem to get a fix on the location of what ever the thing was that was causing the detector to go off and also had trouble figuring out the depth as there didn't seem to be a change on the depth meter even after digging 6 inches down, also the hit seemed to be moving around a bit with the digging. Maybe it was me disturbing the object, not sure but after 15 mins, I ended up giving up on finding whatever it was. I did get dress medallion of a unknown metal type. Probably cast brass, a 6 pointed star with a 6 petal flower in its centre and interlocking circles around the whole thing as back ground and about the size of a 20 cent AU piece. Also a 5 cent coin.
After trying the dry sand I went down closer to the waters edge where the sand was still wet from the tide and the detector started beeping all over the place with all three sound pitches but by then it was too dark to see anything so didn't get to dig. Again, it was hard to get a location on any one item even with doing the criss cross pin point method, just kept getting multiple hits in a small area . My question is...............Do I need to adjust the sensitivity down for wet sand to filter out any background noise from the wet sand or was I just getting a lot of different hits and as such and because they were close together, the coil couldn't pin point any one in particular as it was picking up on the other objects within range. Does the coil only pick up when it is directly over the top of something or does it have a peripheral detection as well making it hard to pin point one thing when there are a group of items with in range.
I have been doing my starting detecting on all metals, then switching over to disk or notch to filter out rubbish so I can get used to the different noises for the different metal types, and as I still don't know exactly what each sound means or what the read out means on the display, am still digging every hit. I figure that is the only way I will get to differentiate between rubbish and treasure from the display screen. Hopefully, given a little more time and practice, I'll know that some targets are not worth the time put in to digging them up. Any help with all this or pointers will be most appreciated.
Thanks, Z.

Hello you have not stated what detector you are using and yes you will need to turn down your sensitivity unless you are using a P.I detector you are best keeping out the wet sand

Thanks for the fast reply,
It's a 3010/MC-1010 bounty hunter clone, made in china. It has a water proof coil or won't that make any difference when detecting sand and the waters edge.

hiya to be honest i think you have wasted you money buying that detector these clones from china have very poor quality parts and cannot detect like a genuine one, you will get false signals and be digging holes with nothing there even on land i know myself because i made the same mistake when i started metal detecting i soon sold it (ebay) and got myself a second hand garrett ace 250 now i am finding things and really enjoying the hobby. as for the waterproof coil nearly every detector has one i find the ace 250 works well on the dry sand and i have to turn down the sensitivity on the wet check out the videos on youtube i hope this helps or if i can help some more just get in touch  Smiley

All metal will not work over the Wet Salt Sands.

Salt is Metal.

Try going to Disrcim with it set all the way down.

Reduce Sensitivity as you need to.

Thanks for the tip on wet salt sand. I'll give it a go on discrim and in disk and notch. I was lucky in the sense that apart from buying a couple of new batteries, I haven't spent anything as the detector was given to me from a mate who got it on ebay but said the sensitivity wasn't any better than the one he already had.
I did find this review on my detector.

On my detector there are 3 settings, all metals, disk and notch as well as the discriminator setting. The disc and notch filter out the unwanted metals so all I was saying is I'll stop searching with all metals and try disk and notch with the discriminator set down and see if that improves my findings. Thanks for the tips, will et you know how it goes, Z.

Sorry, I just realised what u were saying. When I say the discriminator I mean the sensitivity. My machine has, All metals, disk and notch as well as sensitivity. I'll try with the sensitivity set to a much lower setting and stop using all metals. Z.

In Discrim with it set as low as you can. Cool

This is the TR mode in the old machines.

In order to get the rare and older coins in a trashy area, I only discriminate iron and foil when coin shooting. Basicly everything below 25 on my machine or a nickle in your case? because I dont know what machine your using to tell you other wise. Youll lose small gold rings, ear rings and such that way but saves your digging 59238647 holes. Save that chart and refer to it when using discriminate.
