One more thing you need to dig while diving is an anchor of some kind. No, not the big ones used to keep a boat from drifting. A large plastic tent peg will work. When you dig under water, it's like being an astronaut. Every time you move to push in the scoop, you push yourself away from the target. You need a stake to hold with one hand while you dig. I use a plastic tent peg looking thing of my own design but a large tent peg will work. Stick it in the ground with your non-dominant hand and use the scoop with the other. Your detector? Let it float free on a tether. You can do this while snorkeling, using SCUBA or a hookah. It takes too long for free diving normally but if you have huge lungs, give it a try.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.
