I'm looking for suggestions on searching in-land beaches (you know, the ones at lakes and regional parks, etc.).  I'm land-locked in the West, and love searching these sites for lost items.

Welcome to the forums.

The best suggestion you will ever get regarding this is to buy an underwater machine. Most gold and silver jewelry winds up in the water.

I've got a fully-submersable detector, and a long-handled scoop (I just hate getting my hair wet!).  But all the tips I've read about beaches talk about knowing the tides, and they don't seem real applicable to small, in-land lakes.  If there's no tides to speak of, is the sediment ever getting stirred up?

Most swimming areas I have ever seen have sandy bottoms - not to be confused with bathers sitting on the sandy beaches who also have sandy bottoms. Areas at the diving floats sometimes have deeper bottom areas that require dive gear but they are magnets for lost jewelry. After all, even if you notice you've lost a ring, how on earth can you find it at 15 feet in muck? But guess what? It's still there, waiting for you. Some people use dredges to clean out that muck and find hundreds of coins and rings.

Areas where parents go playing in the shallows with the kids (Lots of rings and ear rings there), but also where the high school kids play volley ball in the water or just mess about in it (Watches, bracelets, rings).
So go for it, it?s there waiting for you  Detecting Wise

Dredging a lake, even a small section of it, sounds like something I'd need to get permission for, right?

It depends on the state. Dredging isn't always a large scale operation. There are small dredges that float on inner tubes with long hoses for diving.

Rayredditch & GD - Excellent suggestions!  The lake bottoms around here are solid clay, so it sounds like I need to invest in some more serious digging tools than what I currently have.   Huh?

You?ll need a GOOD POINTED type scoop (Nuttal Diamond is ideal), as a rounded one won?t be much good in hard ground.
Get a floating sieve (A plastic washing up bowl in a car inner tube, the bowl should have 9/16" holes drilled in the bottom), and it should be attached to you with a rope to be towed around !! Dump the scoop in it, and then pump it up and down to get rid of the clay, leaving the goodies in the bowl !!  Wise

I think you're right about the scoop, Ray.  Mine is rounded, and it's really quite a frustrating struggle.  I need something with a sharp point to get through that clay.  I do have a floating sieve, but am lacking the innertube, which is on my list of items to get.
