After two weeks of emails and phone calls with a seller, I finally got a Fisher CZ-20! I found it on searchallcraigs.com and had to drive an hour out of town to go meet the person selling it. It seems to be in perfect shape and it comes with the manual (always a good sign). The only thing is it's an 8" coil, and I think a  10" would have served me better.
Can't wait to take her down to the beach.

So far so good. I'm on tour with my band right now. We're in Norway and on our way to Sweden, Germany, Turkey, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Hong Kong. I would have loved to bring my CZ-20 but due to weight issues, I had to scale back on guitar pedals that I wish I would have had with me.
I'm still having a bit of trouble ground balancing it. I can get it to work fine with no false signals, but when I try to do it like its explained in the manual, it doesn't seem to work. At the beach I've been hunting in All Metal and then rolling up the disc dial to see if I can guess at what I'll be digging out. I'm still digging everything.
I found my first ring on my third time out. It's a 10k gold ring with the Panama flag on it.
Anyway I need to get packing here. If anyone has any tips for the CZ-20 that have worked for them, I'd love to hear them.

Thanks

Nice one!

Regarding coils in general, the only thing a larger coil guarantees is more surface coverage and dismal pinpointing. Depth is way too complicated by factors outside of your control. You will find that the more you use your Fisher and get used to it, the more it will become an extension of your body which, by way of your ears and brain, is the ultimate depth multiplier. Learn your machine. Know it. Listen for those faint whispers as you pass your coil over the ground.

We played a show in Bergen, Norway last night. Now we are in Stockholm, Sweden. Then we go to Munich, Germany. Then Istanbul,Turkey (I'd really like to do some hunting here in the water but I hear they're strict on historical finds).

Then.....Hanoi, Vietnam, HCMC Vietnam, Phnom Penh, Cambodia, HCMC, Vietnam, HK, China. That's about it for this crazy tour. My band is called Dengue Fever and our singer is Cambodian. We play a sort of Asian psychedelic rock kind of a thing.

I was reading Allan's tales of his trip to Bali, and it made me really wish I had my MD with me. But like I said before, with all the weight restrictions these days it would cost too much. And for most of the trip we really only have time to have a good meal and then we're off to the next country.

You will like the detector - I have a CZ-21 which is basically the newer version of it.  Built like a tank and easy to operate.  I opted for a custom straight shaft by Plugger because I did not like the coil wobble, but even without the new upper rod assembly, it is a great detector.  I chest mount mine because I cannot deal with the weight of the detector.  Have fun!

The 8 " coil  will be more sensitive to smaller objects such as rings. It will also be easier to pinpoint with.
