When I detect at the lakeshore, I run into that band of metallic black sand that makes my detector go nuts.  It's right along the water's edge where the wave ripple action is, and extends several feet in either direction onto the sand and into the water.  I'm the type that keeps my discriminator off, because I don't mind digging every pull tab just so I don't miss that gold ring.  Is there anything else I should be trying to minimize the effects of that annoying black sand?Bang Head

The black sand I deal with just makes my detector beep constantly.  Ugh.  Even if there was a big ol' nugget under there, I'd never know it!

Before you say that, give this a try. Tie a ring on a string, bury it and see how the detector reacts. You may be surprised. Often, a hard target will be detected right through that haze.

Try something else while you have the target buried for your experiment. Lift your coil until the sound goes away. That might be as high as 3 inches or so. Maybe even more. Then see how it detects the hard target.

You don't have your detector listed on your details so more specific advice won't likely be forthcoming.

It's a Cobra Beach Magnet that I'm using, if that helps...

Sadly, VLF/TR detectors were actually designed to help you find black sand areas. Try the other tips I mentioned or dial down your sensitivity when you encounter the black sand areas. See if that helps. But do carry along a gold ring on a string to test each option. It will help you determine the best settings to use.

In the world of gold prospecting, black sand is an indicator of the presence of gold. Streams and rivers that have black sand present are often the same that accumulate fine gold particles. You'll already have read some information on that from here no doubt but to summarize: Black sand is heavy and accumulates in the same places as gold.

The gold and black sand are seen in the bottom of the gold pan after processing and that's a good thing. That doesn't mean that gold is ALWAYS found with black sand.

Thus, a detector that can find black sand is a very good thing for prospecting.

If the band of black sand is wide enough, you might want to try doing your ground balancing over the black sand and detect that area separate from the surrounding areas.   (similar in principle at least to hunting out here where we sometimes deal with zones of 'hot' rocks when looking for relics)....just a thought (although I think I'd go with the ring trick first.....sounds simpler and surer)

I looked at the specs for the detector and it doesn't seem to have a ground balance. That's a sad state of affairs for a VLF machine.
