I'm definitely with Hardluck and GoldDigger on this one.......leave the treasure to the crocs otherwise you're likely to wind up like Peter Pan's Cap'n Hook or worse.

the only way i would go near an area with crocks is in a cage and only if i could see massive amounts of gold.
it would be kinda crazy to search an area that holds wildlife that will kill and eat you without a second thought.

That croc would be the new proud owner of a metal detector.

Thanks to all who replied. Most amusing! Grin

For those who dare to venture out of the comfort zone of tourist beaches and kiddie playgrounds, here's 2 methods of dissuading those crocs which were given to me by some experienced people (your success with these methods may vary) :

1) Saturate the water upstream with tuba root. The crocs will leave the water for awhiles. Unfortunately, tuba root will kill other aquatic life, so this method is not the recommended one. If you happen to accidentally sip some tuba-laced water, no worries; you'll be busy vommitting up a storm.

2) Leave half-rotted sacrificial meat in several spots upstream. Fill the crocs' bellies and they'll be sleeping it off.

I wonder how you all would feel about detecting snake-laden patches of jungle or shark-infested waters? Probably nays all around too. Smiley

actually venomous snakes are a fact of life most places I hunt......but that doesn't mean I'm going to barge into a rattlesnake den just for a relatively small treasure.   The question is "Is the potential pay-off worth the risks?"......and if you can't get the risks down to an acceptable level, the pay-off isn't worth persueing.

Calculated Risk is part of many adventures, but taking on Crocs, Snakes, Sharks; treasure hunting or reckless abandon ? The problem is you don't realize your in too deep until your in too deep. Then it is too late and people are lost searching for the lost dutchman mine, or head into jungles of Brazil never to be seen again.

research = planning = risk / safety  = able to enjoy the fruits of your efforts without losing life/limb

Oy, more platitudes?  Grin
Like I said, comfort zones.
Research indeed has been done, and the potential risk/payoff ratio deemed worthwhile; if not, I'd never had started this thread.
Perhaps I made a wrong choice of thread title. It should have read: "HOW DO YOU GET RID OF CROCS IN THE WATER WITHOUT RUNNING INTO TROUBLE WITH THE WILDLIFE DEPT SO THAT I MAY DETECT IN SAFER ENVIRONS?"

Anyways I'm still here unmaimed and obviously still uneaten. Been a little bit sunburnt, couple of wasp stings, none the worse for wear. Those big reptiles seem to prefer rotting goat offal than human flesh. And speaking of humans, I'd deem it far safer to encounter wildlife than some guy bent on treachery/theft.
