I was reading an article about different types of beach gridding. It was talking about 3 different types of beach gridding;

  • Straight Pattern
  • Sideway's Straight
  • circular

Has anyone here had a better experience or result with one rather than the other? I am trying out the Straight and Circular patterns at the beach this coming weekend.

Straight Pattern - The straight pattern is where you start from the high beach line and walk a straight line to the low tide line. At the end of each point you step a foot over, turn around and walk back the other direction and slowly overlap your detector swings. It is important to mark the territory covered

Sideways Straight - It is identical to the straight pattern but you detect sideways turning after you have gone 15 to 20 feet.

Circular - Go to the center of the beach and upon location of your first target, begin a circular pattern. There is no moving over a foot at each ending point as there are no ending points in a circle pattern as the circle size increases as you go around.

keeping in mind that i hunt the desert and not the beach the vast majority of the time.....I'd say it's most likely a matter of PERSONAL preference (i.e. what works best for YOU), influenced by the conditions and the terrain of the specific area you are searching.

As the guy who taught me sql (and tried to teach me perl) used to say, "There is more than one way to skin a cat"  (no offense meant to any animal lovers out there).

The patterns themselves are irrelevant to finding treasure. What they do is help you to be thorough and help you not to miss areas. Being a helter skelter hunter on the beach is the best way to go home empty handed.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

It depends on the tide for me. If the tide is low I will go straight line pattern vertically up and down from the water line to the parking or entrance part of the beach. If the tide is high, I will do straight lines the length of the beach starting the area neareast the water and for an average, work a line about 100' along water edge then turn and work horizontally back and forth till I am finding very little on the upper part of the beach nearest the parking or entrance areas. My scoop dragging trail or the sinker drag will show me where I been. I have been doing a larger zig zag trail at times (on new or unknown to me beaches) just to get a feel where items might be more likely to be found.

When I make it to the beach I do the zig zag and see what I find. I have found that the pennies will be at one level on the beach, the quarters at another level. When I find the levels different coins are I then work those levels. Detecting

Went to the beach this past weekend, used a loose "W" pattern and was able to find a good coin line. Still no oil on the beaches in Galveston!

Good news to hear on both counts (a: that you were able to find the coin line easily and b: that the oil hasn't hit Galveston)

I start neck deep in the water and work my way north and south back to the beach .
