home made Blind Squirrel and  home made Gold Scan IV (neither work)

Hello Everyone,

I'm based in Southern California and looking for a MD that I can use on the beach, in shallow water, and dive with. I use to do a lot of spear fishing but now I'm trying to limit the amount of fish I eat due to all the mercury. Anyway the Aquapulse 1B looks perfect but then I read it works at 30 uS (not really clear on what this is?), which is good for deep water but not for the beach and shallow. Is this true?
I tried building two PIs, one called the Blind Squirrel and the other a Goldscan IV. I never got either one working and am ready to buy one and start hunting.

I think I've narrowed it down to either a Aquapulse 1B, Excalibur II, or the Fisher Cz-21.
If anyone is familiar with the Santa Monica, Malibu, and Venice areas, and has any advice on which one would work for me, I'd  love to hear their advice. Thank You

The Aquapulse is an excellent machine and waterproof up to 100 meters. However it has no discrimination and will make you dig up iron and all kind of junk. Hence it is no good for beach hunting and shallow water. I would recommend the CZ-21. It's an overall excellent machine.

Regards,

Christian

PS: I own both of them ...

Thanks Christian, I'll probably take your advice and roll with the Cz-21 unless I pick up a Excal II on Ebay or Craig's for cheap.

Christian, what are your thoughts on the Minelab Excalibur II? Did you see the message I sent you? Thanks

Hello!  I was wondering if anyone else could comment on the excalibur ii.  My friend and I are just getting into this hobby and he's been looking at the excal ii for underwater detecting.  Are there any other models that compare to this one? Which models do you all prefer for underwater detecting?  Thanks!  ~Chris

I like an Excaliber over the CZ-20 due to having more control over what I want to dig. I haven't tried the newer CZ-21 though, or the newer Excaliber 2. The Excaliber also went a bit deeper and seemed hotter on gold. For water machines, I doubt there is anything in a VLF that can beat them.

If you usually work in fairly clear water and have fairly small wave action, I would use the 10". If the stuff is usually old and deep, again the 10" coil. If you are working dirty water, fast moving water or waves  bigger than 12", then the 8" coil, as you have to work fast and a big scoop usually will get the item within in a couple scoops, after that it is usually lost.
