No such thing as diamond detectors sheesh, next thing you'll be telling me there's no Yamashita treasure.... buncha jokers  Wink  Funny

Been forgetting to look this up, and Hardluck is off digging up shiny stuff somewhere still most likely anyway. Still I had to poke around and found this little piece. Sounds like the whole package may have possibly been recovered. Of course this being in a paper halfway round the world who really knows how acurate (or not) it is?

This was found in The Racine Journal-Times, Racine Wis. Monday afternoon edition May 4, 1942

I'm not that far away at all. But I don't chase rabbits on foot. I also don't go after an errand already completed. That account in the newspaper is enough for me to strike that one from my list of long shots.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Hi all,
The plot involves a world War 1 Russian air ace, the carnage caused by Japanese air raids on Broome during Worl war 2 and a missing fortune in diamonds sent to Australia from the Dutch East Indies-----and it's all true and the diamonds are still missing. Todays value $40 million+

Details can be read in- The Diamond Dakota Mystery- Juliet Willis (Publisher- Allen & Unwin.)

I was living and working on Koolan Island (Iron Ore Mining) back in the 70's and we put together an expedition to search for these diamonds. Koolan Island is to the North of Broome in the Bucaneer Archipelago. We had an aboriginal guide who claimed he knew where there was the remains of a Dakota. We deposited jerry cans of fuel on islands along the course to enable us to cover the distance on the three power boats that we were to use. Unfortunately due one boat seizing its outboard engine, a crew member suffering acute sea sickness we turned back. Other circumstances beyond our control prevented us completing the journey. The 400 litres of fuel was abandoned and the rusting jerry cans would still be there to this day. Actually 160 litres were carried into a cave high above sea level so it is possible these 8 jerry cans would still be intact.
This area of the North West Australian coastline is extremely rugged and the only access is by boat.

Some very nice info on this one. It's interesting that a story can have so many details and yet still be a bit of a mystery. Smiley

Well done Nightjar!

Obviously the diamonds were found and scattered but are there any caches left? Perhaps Palmer made a stash with the rest. Seems like we need to look into his activities.

Go Up Go Down

Hi all,
When I was in Broome in 2000, they had this story posted in the newspaper archives in the Broome museum.  I'm sure the story can be researched through any online search of the Broome newspaper from 1944 (or when the attack took place)

Cheers,
Ken
