Hello everybody

I am interested in a vague story about a treasure that may be buried somewhere north of Broom.

The story I heard was a long time ago and my memory of it is not clear with the exact details....

During ww2 as The Japanese invaded Dutch east Indies and Singapore had already fallen. A lone civil DC3 was was fleeing the Dutch East Indies with high profile passengers and secret shipment of Diamonds.

It was alleged that two zeros in support of a bombing force attacked the US/BRITISH AUSTRALIAN Flying boat squadron based north of Broom West Australia destroying several flying boats in harbour.

The two zero attacked this lone DC3 and shot it down. the Pilot badly wounded bravely crash landed the DC3 on a remote beach north of Broom. The plane wreck was shot up on the beach killing and wounding more of the passengers.

The survivors made their way to an aboriginal mission here some more wounded died. The shipment of Diamonds was left of the wrecked plane. however a few days later when team came to collect the valuable cargo of the wreck the shipment was missing.

A few weeks later a old station hand bush worker came into town trying to sell some diamonds but was sized upon by the police and remanded the old man in custody in which the shock of being arrested led to the old timer having a heart attack and dying. He claimed he only took some of diamonds and the rest of his shipment he stashed in a small bank along the coast of crash site and Broom itself.

War censors covered up the story at the time in fear of creating panic along the coast of Western Australia. The story only came out years later by some of the survivors and people involved the recovery of plane wreck.

I am interested in any information that might confirm this interesting story?

Regards Hardluck.  Huh?

Nice story Hardluck well done I wonder if the Broome Police still have a record of the event. That might be a good place to start, many of these tales originate in watering holes (pubs) after a hard days work Broome was famous for its pearling industry as some may well know. You have an interesting project on your hands good luck in your search.  regards alan hassell

Hi HardLuck

I do remember this story, I pulled out some old files today and located a document that was mailed to me back in 2003.

Papers relating to the nomination of a suite of wrecks in
Broome to the Register of Heritage Places under the
Heritage of Western Australia Act 1990

here is an extract :

Soon all the other aircraft moored nearby suffered a similar fate as they were
strafed with small arms and cannon fire. All were holed and started to sink,
at the same time they too caught fire. Being aluminum, a known source of
fuel in high temperature blazes, it appears that in many cases, the fire spread
rapidly progressing downwards to consume much of what remained above
the water.

The wings invariably broke at their roots and having floats on their
ends they inverted as the main hull sank beneath them, often to cross over the
centre-line of the aircraft?s hull.

Some hulls exploded, others just sank according to the order in which the
water entered the hull and floatation systems. In the description of the
wrecking of Catalina Y-59, for example, one Dutch aviator Fritz Van Hulssen
described how the rear of the plane was ?gutted? by fire and sank at anchor.

The Japanese departed, as quickly as they came, leaving fifteen burning
flying boat hulks sinking in the waters just off the town jetty and many
shattered aircraft on the landing strip closer to town.

Other aircraft including a B 52 bomber were downed as they tried to escape and one unfortunate DC3
type carrying refugees and a parcel of diamonds towards Broome met the
departing Japanese flight, and after being extensively damaged, was forced to
crash-land in the shallows north of the town.

Many Broome residents displayed great heroism in the face of extreme
danger in trying to save the refugees trapped in the sinking, burning, aircraft.
Other townsfolk also rallied around to provide shelter and assistance to the
refugees when the raid was over.

if you would like the complete document let me know, i will photo copy it ans convert it to pdf format.

hope this helps

Regards

That's where one of those gem detectors we were asked about last month would come in handy  Smiley

Goldnboy, there is nothing similar to a metal detector that will help you find diamonds or any other gem (unless it is mounted in a metal setting or kept with metal, in which case a metal detector will pick up the metal).  There are some tools out there that are called "diamond detectors" but "all" they do is tell you whether the diamond you are holding in your hand is real or fake.

Sorry to burst your bubble.
