Hi
Did early wooden coal ships in 1880- 1940 carry money or gold between Wollongong and Sydney?

Like any ships of that era, the often carried payroll for the crew and probably some extra cash or gold for purchases and etc.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Hi
Thank you. I am new to this but was wondering if gold sovereigns corrode in salt water? Also gold from a ship that has been washed up, so found away from the boat , is it still protected under Australian law?

Regarding Australian law, that's best done with a few phone calls on your end. Salvaging differs from state to state but there are also federal laws there to deal with. I lived there for 13 years and dove with Max Cramer and Hugh Edwards on wrecks and they always complained about the unfairness of the laws.

Gold does not corrode at all in salt water. It will be just like new if you find any. Good luck!
