Now that is stunning how long did it take you to restore it?

I have to bring it to Belgium by plane, so it was in two times. First the plate with the handle, then the body. I was a bit lucky with the weight of that thing. It was 15 kg - 30 pounds all together. In a local flight you may have only 20 kg - 40 pounds. Nobody said anything about the overweight.
I first cleaned it with acid, then I put it in a base (ammonia) to neutralise the acid. Then take it a part and polish every part of it. Then I put it back together.

so much better then leaving it to corrode on the sea floor.

I agree, Jamjars, it's a pity to leave it on the bottom of the sea were nobody can see it.
Hi Xavier, it took a few days to polish it. Brass is easy to polish but there are a lot of peaces to clean. And I have to restore the frontplate also. You need a stick of brass polish and a good buffle on a drillmachine. Anyhow the result is always better with a long soft polish brush. For me it is more winter work because it is sometimes to cold to dive.

Yes where I was diving the water was about 8 centigrade so you could dive with a wet suit only the first five minutes or so it felt a bit cold. Nothing like some elbow grease to get the brass all shining again but how did you get the front plate to come out so good?

I'm guessing the high technology of paint, Xavier. Works wonders.

Wasn't that baked enamel like they used in the old bath tubs?

Yep, it was. First I clean it very softly with a little acid and water. Then I was amazed about the good condition of the plate. I only have to redo the black numbers, the reds were good and stayed original.
After a few month the brass became a bit duffy and so it stays till now. I clean it every year but the telegraph was never so shiny as in the first time. Because I have a lot of brass things, thats why I only repolish it one time a year.
By the way, both the telegraphs on the bridge are with two friends (divers) of me.
